A surprise, but one that fit in perfectly
Good mystery stories have great surprise endings -- and that's what Karen Antonio DeQuattro gave us in her winning Chapter Four.

Returning to Nancy Nolan's voice, DeQuattro has written a piece that continues the high standards of dialogue, characterization and crisp style established throughout the serial; like the previous winners, she knows Nancy and Nick, and beautifully captures the eccentricities of the other players.

And while her solution to the case of the missing diamond was a surprise, it fit perfectly, tying up all loose ends and making us think: of course.

DeQuattro, 26, is a title examiner for Nationwide Title & Escrow Co. in Providence. She has previously begun a novel, but writes that "Life's been hectic, and aside from some hastily scribbled story ideas, my contest entry is actually the first thing I've written in at least a year."

She lives with her son, Ryan, and fianc , Gary, in Westport.

Kathleen Moffitt of Saunderstown was the second-place winner selected by our judge, staff writer G. Wayne Miller.

Examining all four Baby Hope chapters as a whole, we think it would be difficult to determine which author wrote what -- or whether one person was responsible for all.

After G. Wayne Miller wrote chapter one, the readers who wrote the winning chapters two and three were Christine A. Francis, of Providence, and Julia Crowley Parmentier, of Foster.

Congratulations to all three winners!
