To the Charette family,
I'm deeply sorry for your loss. I remember your daughter as a highly energetic, funny woman. I use to taunt her at her soccer games when she played with my sister Jocelyn. For all the times she act goofy and bring a smile to my face, she was always very serious about being a Marine when she joined. Words cannot express enough how sorry I am for your loss. Your daughter truely symbolizes what courage is and she is a true hero in my book. You raised a terrific person. I am terribly sorry for your loss with all of my heart.
Love,
Justin

I am a former Marine and my boyfriend is currently deployed. I check the USMC webpage daily for news and photos and beng from RI I was surprised and impressed when I saw the pictures of your daughter stating where she was from. It is a rare honor to be a Marine, and it is even more rare when that Marine is both a female, and from RI. While I did not know your daughter, I send your entire family my deepest sympathies and know that she served her country and her family proudly. Semper Fi.

I met Holly shortly after I arrived in Iraq. The camp we were at is very small and many people told me that there was another "Charette" at the camp. I grew up in Providence and was surprised to find out she was from Cranston. We talked several times but I never had a chance to see if we had any relatives in common. She was well liked and respected by everyone here. Although I never found out if she was a distant relative, she was a fellow Marine and her loss affects us all deeply.
My sincerest condolences.

Holly was a very dear friend to me. Holly and I worked together at HQBN for almost 3 years. We have been through alot together and I trusted her with my life and my kids. We had promised to keep intouch after we both got out, I only lived in New Bedford, MA. She would always cheer me up when I was down, she'd just laugh and that would make me laugh. I miss her so much, she was such a sweet person. Her parents did a great job raising her to be strong, caring and brave young woman. She's home with the Lord now and we will see her again someday.

dear charettey,
you were like sister to me. i was with you 5 days a week at the hqbn mailroom in that 6 by 12 room. there is so much i want to say. we knew so much about each other. we worked so hard in that little room but we made sure everyone got their mail. somedays we close the door lock it and just talk about everything or when we were busy somedays we wouldn't say much till the end of the day. or some days we'd close that door and just take a little nap or untill someone knocked on the door we would get so mad. but i got out i felt so bad that i wouldn't be doing mail with you over there. i love you girl i will miss you and every conversation and all that laughter coming from "our" mailroom.

To the family of Holly,
Lcpl Charette was one of my Marines in the S-1 shop at HQBN. I worked with her for about 2 years and i enjoyed every minute that i spent with her. No matter what kind of day it was she would always put a smile on our faces in the S-1. I could always count on Holly to have a story that would make me laugh so hard it hurt, and just seeing her smile, would put a smile on my face. She was a good Marine and a good friend and i am sorry for you loss. Everyone who knew Holly is feeling a loss. And i know that at this moment, there is nothing anyone can say to help you cope with your loss. I will always remember Holly for her goofiness and her love of Britney Spears. She was one of the hardest working Marines that I had and always wanted to help people out. Holly and her family will remain in my prayers and heart forever. LCpl Charette you are a hero to me and you symbolize the TRUE female MARINE! OOHRAH. God Bless.
Alex, hang in there.

Holly was a student of mine throughout her senior year. Her vibrant smile and energetic ways gave me such joy. If I were to paint a picture of Holly through imagery, her portrait would be comprised of radiant sunshine, sparkling water, and the innocent green shades of early spring. I will miss Holly and her beautiful youthful spirit. My thoughts and prayers are with her family and many friends!

To The Familly of Ms. Holly Charette,
I understand that there aren't any words that can justify or make ammends for the loss of your beautiful daughter. One thing is for sure, she is in a far better place than we all are. She had the most unbelievable smile and seemed to always be happy. I never worked with her but we lived in the same Barracks at Lejeune and became really good friends. All she ever talked about was her Family and how she wanted to be happy with her boyfriend Alex. I was fortunate to have lunch with her and her battle buddy on Sunday June 12th and the last thing I said to her, which I always did-even back home, was to be careful. I told her I'd email her when I returned to base before she left her Temporary Duty here in Fallujah. I remember last year when she called me at the Barracks from the Britney Spears concert she was so excited about. She got me an autograph from a singer named Kelis in which she knew I liked and she even put her on the phone so I could speak to her. Her thoughtfullness and her ability to turn a gloomy moment into a better one will be my everlasting image and memory of her. Her smile will be forever engraved in my mind and in my heart. She was a wonderful girl and words cannot express how deeply missed she will be.

I extend my deepest sympathies to the family and friends, Marine brothers and sisters of Holly Charette. I never personally new Holly, but remember seeing her in the halls of Cranston East. As an infantry Marine, it never gets any easier when one of your own pays the ultimate sacrifice. It hurts even more when it hits home like this. Even though I may not have known Holly, she was a Rhode Islander from Cranston, more importantly, she was a Marine. I have been reading how Holly was an individual who brought smiles to peoples faces, and I can assure you, that the job she held, definitly was as vital to any other in the Marine Corps. I can personally assure you that smiles were brought to Marines faces when Holly showed up with the mail. Holly, it puts sadness in my heart, knowing that you are gone. Rest in peace Marine. "And when I get to heaven, I'll walk up to the gates, I'll talk with old Saint Peter about my destined fate. The story is the same to him, the story is known quite well. Another Marine reporting sir, I spent my time in hell." Semper Fi Marine, job well done.

I can't even begin to express my sympathies to the Charette family. I was a fellow cheerleader with Holly for the Cranston East Hockey Cheerleading squad and there we made memories that I will never forget. Holly was such a light on the squad and everywhere she went. She had this goreous smile and a laugh you couldn't help laughing along with. She was funny, she was beautiful, she was sweet and she was caring- most of all she was radiant. I will never forget her or the blessing she was to my life and all of the lives that she touched with that smile. I'll miss you Holly, you will not be forgotten. I first met Holly freshman year in high school and soon realized she was a special person. Over the course of high school, and having many classes together, we formed a friendship revolving around humor. She was a different type of girl, I always remember her laughing and making others laugh. During High School, I remember telling Holly I was going into the Marines and she said that she was also interested, but I never knew she was really going to go. Returning from boot camp, I herd from a friend that saw Holly at the super market and she gave him her number so I could give her a call. I soon gave Holly a call and we spoke for some time. We compared training, told stories, and laughed about how different our lifestyles had become. I then started to give Holly advice about the Marines as she listened for a little while before saying, with confidence I’m fine and like what I’m doing. So we quickly went back to making jokes about me going into the reserves and her being on active duty.
As time went on I got activated for Operation Iraqi Freedom and befor going over seas I was able to spend sometime in NC. Well one day at the chow hall I herd O’ MARA in a familiar voice turning around to see a big smiling Holly Charette. We were both happy to see each other and hung out a couple of times before I went over seas. Holly I never thought anything would happen to you and am so sorry to hear this news. You were a great Marine and a great person and represented not only challenges that females encounter in the military, but also how important it is to have honorable women like your self serve our country. Having lost friends to this war and knowing what its like trying to find a morale booster, I bet the Marines you served with couldn’t of asked for a more pleasant or better person to serve next to. Because of your sacrifice and dedication Holly, you have inspired me to continue in the Marines. Holly you will be missed God Bless you and you and you’re family.

“I have been shown in the files of the War Department a statement of the Adjutant General of Massachusetts that you are the mother of five sons who have died gloriously on the field of battle. I feel how weak and fruitless must be any words of mine which should attempt to beguile you from the grief of a loss so overwhelming. But I cannot refrain from tendering to you the consolation that may be found in the thanks of the Republic they died to save. I pray that our Heavenly Father may assuage the anguish of your bereavement, and leave you only the cherished memory of the loved and lost, and the solemn pride that must be yours, to have laid so costly a sacrifice upon the Alter of Freedom.”

I am sorry that our world situation is such that this has happened. Holly was obviously proud to be serving her country. She has taught us all something very valuable. The value of life itself.

MR. AND MRS. CHARETTE,
HOLLY WAS AN OUTSTANDING MARINE AND A GREAT FRIEND. ONE OF THE MANY THINGS THAT SHE WILL BE REMEMBERED FOR IS HER BEAUTIFUL SMILE. HOLLY USED TO BABYSIT MY CHINCHILLA, MR. NIBBLES, WHEN I WENT HOME TO NJ ON THE WEEKENDS. I COULDN'T ASK FOR A BETTER FRIEND. EVERYONE HAS ONE FRIEND THAT NO MATTER WHAT MAY BE WRONG WITH THE DAY AT HAND, THIER PERSONALITY HAS A WAY TO LIGHT UP THE ROOM AND MAKE ALL YOUR PROBLEMS GO AWAY. SHE DEFINATELY WAS MINE. YOU RAISED SUCH A POLITE AND THOUGHTFUL DAUGHTER THAT ANY PARENT WOULD BE EXTREMELY PROUD OF. HOLLY WAS A TRUE INSPIRATION TO EVERYONE SHE WORKED WITH. MY ONLY REGRET ABOUT HOLLY WAS NOT BEING ABLE TO BE THERE WITH HER. I AM SO, SO SORRY FOR YOUR LOSS BUT IF THERE IS ANYONE WHO DESERVES TO BE AN ANGEL FOR THE REST OF ETERNITY, HOLLY WOULD BE MY ONLY CHOICE. MAY GOD BLESS YOU AND GIVE YOU THE STRENGTH TO GET THROUGH THIS. MARINES ARE A TIGHT KNIT FAMILY WHEN ONE IS LOST, WE ALL LOSE A PART OF OURSELVES.
From Pete Martinez,

Holly was her name, but for a few of us we all new her as Charette, as the one who made us smile when things were down at work. She could bring out the good in almost anyone, and she was a very happy, and funny person to be around. She means everything to me! It all started when i was assigned as a Postal Clerk for my battalion, and everytime i went to do a mail pick-up, we would always see each other. We had so much laughs and smiles that when everybody who came in their to pick up mail , they saw her with her great smile, and everyone else would join in on the fun, and 4get all about work. She was a Great friend, a beautiful person in and out, she was a great Marine, but most of all she was my SISTER, someone who was apart of the Brotherhood that we hold up high here in the United States Marine Corps. She was apart of my family, and always will be. To the family of Holly Charette, i give you my blessings, i give you my prayers, and i feel your emotions, and most of all i give you a son to hold on to close, because with out your daughters inspiration and happiness i would of never of kept a smile so bright that it lights up everone's day here at work to. So my friend i know you can see this and i know you are up above the clouds with the Angels, this is from Lance Corporal Martinez, Pete AKA Marty! Take care, and SEMPER FI!

I didn't know Holly very well but we were in JROTC together and Hockey Cheerleaders together in 2000. When I think of her I think of her bubbly personality and happy-go-lucky attitude. She was and always will be a great role model for students and everyone in her life.
From Michael Goines,

Holly was a shining light to all of us who knew her personally and to those who didn't. She had a smile that could light up an entire room. I met Holly through a mutual friend, and no matter when or where or what mood anybody else was in, she had one of those smiles on hand that no one could resist. She was goofy and bubbly, always ready for a good laugh, and one of the most sincere and caring persons I have ever had the privlege to meet. I am proud to call her my friend and fellow Marine. She will forever remain in all of our hearts. She will be deeply missed.

To the Family and Friends of LCpl. Holly Charette,
I am so very sorry for your loss. My heart aches for you and you will remain in my most fervent prayers. Although I did not know Holly I feel a tremendous amount of pride in the brave and patriotic young woman that she was. May the pride you feel for her valor help to lessen the burden of your profound grief.
To Holly, I would say my neighbors and I faced down the "devils angels" on 9-11. We didn't intend to...we were just there. You went to route them out and hunt them down, and we are in awe of your bravery. Thank you so much for defending the freedoms that we so cherish. Thank you for your sacrifice in the service of the country that I love so very much. We will always honor your memory, and you will always be an American hero in my home.

To all of Holly's family and friends:
I am so sorry. We all lost someone so amazing, so special.
I first met Holly when she was a freshman at east, i was a year ahead and on the field hockey team with her. We became very close, she was one of the kindest, warmest, funniest and most giving people that i have ever known. i'll never forget the day she literally gave me the shirt off her back, i was feeling low, and we were at her locker before homeroom one day, i told her that i loved her top, and she pulled me into the bathroom and switched shirts with me! that's how i'll remember her, as the most humble generous person. In the three years that i saw her at least 5 days a week i never heard her say one bad thing about anyone. i can't say that about ANYONE else i knew in high school.
I called her "bean" it stated out as hollybean and was evntually shortened to just bean. she was honest and brave. she lived and died with more dignity than most people will ever know.
Holly i will miss you so very much. i will never forget your smile or laughter. And I'm sorry that i diddn't tell you more often how incredible you were.
My heartfelt condolences to all of Holly's family.
My deepest empathy to all that knew her, we were lucky, Holly was truly one of a kind.

I wish I could say or do something to make this time easier, but I can't. Their is one piece of advice I can say, and that is ,don't try to get rid of the pain inyour heart, you know that awful pain that gnws at you constantly, that pain that just won't leave, You need to feel thaat pain and learn to live with it, and before you know it is a part of you. And you have licked it. Its been 14 years since I'v lost my daughter. You will be a different person now. Remember always how brave, beutiful and wonderful your daughter is. As a father of a Marine in the 2/10 Fox Battery who just returned from Iraq, my deepest condolences go out to your family. I cant imagine what you are going through. The service , courage , bravery and sacrifice that Holly has given will never be forgotten. We consider all Marines as part of our family and especially the 2nd division as our imediate family, when one hurts we all hurt. Everytime I look at my son or think about him I will always remember people like Holly who have given thier all to make this world a better place. The impact that she has made on the people she came in contact with shall live on forever. When my son left for Iraq his sister gave him a shirt that said on it a quote from Ronald Reagan " Most people spend thier entire live wondering if they have made a difference, a Marine doesnt have that problem". You should be proud of Holly as we all are and may God bless you and keep her in his care.

It's hard enough to see Marines make CNN headlines. I would never imagine it would be someone close to me. It was just like yesterday we were in my house haveing a good time with the guys and then I hear what happened. Someone I work with in the same battalion has passed. I lost 4 good friends, defending thier country with pride. Every time I go to sleep I think about what I have. Is those Marines like her that make you appriciate things even more. Is those marines like her that make you strive and push your self even further. Marines like Holly will never be forgotten. They set the stone, for what this country was build on. Holly was the kind of person who despite being dirty and tired as I often saw her, she was always smiling. Myself a Rhode Islander, we met out in the city of Fallujah working. The two of us soon became close and she proved to be an incredibly dependable friend. From our idle chatter to in depth conversation, perhaps I'll always miss our comparisons of the food we had to eat in the city. Despite the conditions in which we all worked she loved what she was doing, and that helped everyone around her continue to fight. I know now that I have the best gaurdian angel a Marine could ever ask for. Her presence is felt everyday. Everyone here wishes we could be there for your family in this difficult time. We pray for you and her everyday. We will not faulter, we will prevail, and her legacy to our cause will live forever. We miss you, Holly. Semper Fidelis. James McMahon LCpl. USMC

How proud you must be of your daughter!
A young woman in the Marine Corp who served her country courageously. A young American more brave than most of us who call ourselves "American."
I hope your memories of Holly will bring you comfort in the difficult days ahead.
From APRIL SENATUS,

I knew Holly personally for 2 and a half years when I worked with her at Headquarters Battalion. Words can not express how hurt I was when I found out what happened to Holly. When we worked at the S-1, it was like a big family away from home. When she first got to Camp Lejeune I was her roommate in the barracks for a couple of months. She and I had much in common…except I wasn’t a Britney Spears fan like she was… (Holly would laugh about that. LOL) Holly was a good person and full of spunk. She knew how to put a smile on someone's face when they were feeling down. She was hard working and diligent in her duties as a Marine...especially when it came to giving out the mail! Mail for a Marine (or anyone in the service) is like GOLD. Her job allowed her to touch the lives of SO many people…she definitely earned her Angel wings. : ) I remember her smile...it was like sunshine every time she smiled. She will always be remembered in my heart.

Holly, You were the kind of person that anyone would be proud to have known. You were fun to be around, genuinely nice to everyone you knew, and quite funny. We both loved playing field hockey with you and your smile will be sorely missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with you and your family.

Your daughter represented the best of us, as someone who was willing to put her life on the line for something she believed in. She was a true Marine, and a Hero to all of us that serve, or have served, our country. As a parent, my heart goes out to you.

I extend condolences and the deepest sympathy on behalf of my wife Donna and our entire family. On Memorial Day we dedicated a monument to our son, Captain Matthew August, who was killed in action near Fallujah in January 2004. That morning I said our family's prayer was that there would be no need for any more memorials to fallen heroes in Rhode Island. Such was not God's will and we will never understand "why". Holly A. Charette, Lance Corporal, United States Marine Corps went to a strange land to do her duty as a member of the armed forces of this country. Holly volunteered out of a sense of duty and patriotism as precious few young people are willing to do today. She, along with our son and several other Rhode Islanders, has made the ultimate sacrifice for the freedom we all enjoy. May they rest in eternal peace. Semper Fidelis, Holly, Always Faithful. You are true to the Corps and your state and your country.

The prayers of myself, as well as my entire family are being offered during this time of dire tragedy. I had known Holly for over two years, having worked with her at Camp Lejeune. Such a bright smile, and eager eyes; to learn, as well as offer her kind and enthusiastic personality traits to those around her, in times of their own despair. God Bless, and the burden of her loss will allow her spirit to live with us all till we meet with her once more..

Dear Holly and Family,
I don't even know where to begin... All I think about is the memories we shared together in that tiny mailroon in Camp Lejeune. Everything we talked about together. About Danielle, about Alex.... How we stuck together through everything.... how you would stay with me on those runs when everyone would pass us up. How you named us "The Double Mint Twins"... I can make a list of memories but it would take all day. I just want you to know that a piece of my heart was taken with you when I found out that you were gone. I think about you, your family, and friends everyday. I cry when no one else knows I do... I thought about you last night when we were celebrating the 4th of July. I thought about Dixon too and how she's coping without you. Thankyou for laying your life down for us. You will always be in my heart. I love you. Jasmina

My name is Cpl Jason Dorsey and I left the Corps May 19th of last year. Holly and myself were very close freinds and I Will always remember that great welcoming smile when I would see her. Holly was a beautiful Marine who enjoyed life. She always wanted to stay active with something. One night Holly was hungry so we both went out to eat at Lonestar steakhouse. While waiting for our meals the waiter offered us drinks(we were under 21). The waiter mistakenly served us our drinks(long island ice teas) before asking our ages. So when he finally asked was I of age, I took a huge gulp of the drink and replied no! At that moment Holly laughingly spit out all of her drink on the wall. We laughed about that experience the whole evening. Ill never forget that! We also collected sharks teeth together on Onslow beach, while she vented/expressed how much she missed her boyfreind & My buddy Alex(while he served in Iraq) She was full of life and that is what everyone will remember most about her. "Holly you will always hold a spot in my heart and you will be truly missed".

So today Holly, i went to the memorial service that they held for you and all others fallen from RI. The rain was falling hard, nd you know me i had my camera ready to go. In the background the national anthem was being sung, and i felt myself being to cry as i stared up at our flag waving high in the grey sky. I didnt see many people who we knew just politicians. Mom and Dad couldnt be there as it was short notice so, i went in honor of you can the fam. They uinvailed this beautiful statue. i stated to cry so hard. taps played in the background and then it was the sad 21 gun salute. i lost it, i broke down. some lady who i didnt know grabbed me and brought me into her arms. It hurt. knowing the reason why you were on that statue. but someone at the ceremony said these great words about the staute "place your ear on the staute and you will hear so many stories, and each one will be different" he is right Holly. Every story from each person on that staue is different. I love you Holly. more then words can say! may you giude me throuh the next couple of months, as its going to be hard. I LOVE YOU.

I am the sister of Joe Giguere. Holly and Joe dated in highschool. My brother took her to her dances. They were a great couple. My mom still has the pictures up in our home. I am saddened by her death, even though it has been a year since Holly has passed. She was a great person. Always smiling. I know she is in heaven now. She was so young, she would have been 23 now. From Jared Dugger,

More than two years later, I can still clearly remember seeing Holly working at Lejeune and in Ramadi, doing all the things that a good Marine will do every day. Every single time I saw her in Iraq, I asked her where my mail was. You could tell there were some tough days for her here, but more often than not, she'd grin and say she was working on it. You never could get her down for long.
I know the Marines who served with her at Headquarters Battalion will miss her dearly, as I do. She was surrounded by close friends her whole life, even during wartime, and that's a testament to who she was as a daughter, friend, and Marine.
No words can bring Holly back or make things better, but there's also nothing that can take away the mark she left on this world and the memories of her smiles, hard work and dedication.

Holly- I'm not sure why, but I've found myself thinking about you lately. I didn't know you well but I don't think anyone who ever met you could forget that smile of yours. When I think of you, I remember you dressing up in the big blue M&M costume with tights to sell candy and stuff at the Showcase. I get sad when I think of the loss your family and friends, particularly Danielle, suffered but I always smile when I remember that costume... I was embroidering a blanket for my unborn nephew then (he's six now, OMG) and you teased me about joining an old lady's sewing circle. That's how I'll always remember you, Holly; as someone who could make anybody smile. I feel lucky to have known someone as brave as you.
