Mountains in the sea
A three-part series by Providence Journal staff writer Paul Davis

She was stolen from Africa. And brought to America in a ship owned by prominent Rhode Island merchants. Her story is 1 in 11 million. Unlike so many others, it can be told. Two scholars from Brown, and Yale, along with a group of Rhode Island artists have completed the circle of her life.

02.13.2005: Part one

No one knows her real name. As a little girl she sang and played games in a village 100 miles from the West African coast. Beneath a grass roof she slept on a bed of clay. During the growing season, nearly 200 inches of rain pelted the tall palms and spiky grasslands. But when the sun broke through, the rice and fields sparkled like emeralds.

02.14.2005: Part two

In Africa, an anthropologist unearths the remains of a slave route in Sierra Leone. In America, a descendant of Elias Ball discovers the records of his family's rice plantation.

The circle of Priscilla's life is complete. Thomalind Martin Polite agrees to return to Sierra Leone seven generations after her ancestor was sold to the captain of the Hare.
